May 5, 2018 @ 11:00 am - 7:00 pm

#CourtneyCoversCleveland is excited to be attending and blogging about the 2018 VegFest!

The 2018 Cleveland VegFest will take place at the Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland on Saturday, May 5, from 11am until 7pm. More than 10,000 visitors from Northeast Ohio and beyond are expected to attend this day long festival – the largest of its kind in the Midwest – presented by the Cleveland Vegan Society and Jakprints.

The day will begin with yoga and mindfulness, and continue with a plethora of activities, including food demos, live music, interactive kids’ activities, a huge variety of delicious food to try and buy at the Cleveland Water Vegan Food Court, and shopping galore in the Cruelty Free Marketplace. Back by popular demand, VegFest sponsor Velofix, will be offering test rides on their epic Elby electric bikes! There will be movie screenings throughout the day in the Cleveland Cinemas Screening Room, and speakers from Cleveland and across the world, covering every aspect of veganism, from animal rights and social justice, to the environmental impacts of animal agriculture, to health, wellness and fitness.

“We are thrilled to have so much diversity in our speaker lineup this year,” said Jennifer Kaden, VegFest Speakers Chair, “It really reflects how widespread veganism has become.” Speakers run the gamut from 11-year-old TED Talk activist, Genesis Butler, to NFL Star David Carter, AKA the “300 Pound Vegan”, to the star of Whale Wars on the Discovery Channel, Peter Hammarstedt.

Other Speakers/Presenters include:

  • Kim A. Williams, MD – First vegan president of the American College of Cardiology and current Chief of Cardiology at Rush University Medical Center
  • Christopher Sebastian – Vegan and social justice advocate focusing on the complex relationships between animal violence, environmental racism, classism, and capitalism
  • Joy Karuna – Founder and Director of Northeast Ohio’s beloved LASA Sanctuary
  • Mark Messina, PhD, MS – Internationally recognized expert on the health effects of soy, and co-author of The Simple Soybean and Your Health
  • Tabatha James – Atlanta based vegan blogger at The Sensible Vegan, and children’s book author

In addition to the Main Stage, a full day of entertainment is planned at the Food Demo Stage and the Advance Ohio Music Stage. Two time Cupcake Wars winner Doron Petersan will be making a recipe from her famous Sticky Fingers Bakery in Washington D.C. Plus, local vegan cooks – and characters – David “Bitchy Vegan Homo” Huffman and Sonia “Vegan Vicki” Steele, and more, will be demoing – and sampling – delicious vegan fare. One of today’s hottest emerging artists, Atlanta vegan rapper, Grey, will be headlining the stellar music lineup.

New this year, the Cleveland Vegan Society is launching the Vegan Kids Club. Kids will have an opportunity to interact with several of the speakers who will be doing kid-centric presentations just for them, including a workout with an NFL player, and a cupcake demo from the winner of Cupcake Wars! Additionally, there will be yoga, crafts, movies, and a panel discussion about ‘Growing Up Vegan’.

VegFest is free and open to everyone – carnivores included! There is a $5 suggested donation which will get the first 2,500 attendees a commemorative tote bag filled with coupons and other goodies.
